MG was born on the 2nd of October 1869 in Porbandar in India as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His father was a businessman an he was the mostly favourite child of his mother. Because of his mother (she was a Hindu) he learned from an early age the tenets (Dogmen) of non – injury to loving beings, vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification (=Läuterung, Reinigung) and tolerance between members of various creeds and sects. As a child he experienced also conflicts of his father with a British officer.
In May 1882, at the age of thirteen, he was married through an arrangement to Kastruba Makharji. They had four sons together and Kastruba often takes over his supply in politics, if he was in arrest. Her death in 1944 was a great loss for him.
Now I want to tell you something about his political commitment (=Engagement):
Gandhi went in years 1888 till 1891 to London to study law. After his return he became lawyer in Bombay. Two years later he was sent from an Indian businessman to South Africa. He wanted to stay only a year there, but then he returned in the year 1915 to India. This years in South Africa coined (=prägten) him in his manner. Soon he got to know, that it is unpleasant to be an Indian in South Africa, because he wanted to go with the train in first class, but the inspector and a police man told to go in the luggage van (=Gebäckswagen). He answered back, but he was thrown out of the train. After this experience he started his political commitment. He founded the Natal Indian Congress with himself as secretary. Through this organization he formed then Indian community of South Africa into a heterogeneous political force.
Gandhi returned to India in 1896 to bring his wife and children to love with him in South Africa. When he returned in January 1897 a white mob attacked and tried to kill him.
