Martin Luther KingVorgeschichte: - the 1950s , 1960s witnessed (Zeuge sein von) major upheavals (Umbruch) in US as blacks struggled for equal rights - the Civil Rights Movement was mainly connected with one name: Martin Luther King - in second world war lot of blacks fought side by side with white soldiers in Europe, Far East - but on their return they found parts of the nation had retained (festgehalten an) separate schools for blacks and whites, restaurants, toilets for “Whites only” - almost hundred years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation blacks were still being treated as second-class citizens - the Ku-Klux-Klan, a white racist organization, terrorized those who resisted the system of racial segregation (Rassentrennung) in south - a important organization was the NAACP, the “National Association for the Advancement of colored People” (einflussreiche Bürgerrechtsorganisation) - 1954 the Supreme Court declared that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional (verfassungswiedrig) - one year later: Martin Luther King, now 26-years old minister of a Baptist church in Montgomery became spokesman of a one-Year bus boycott against the city - That action united (vereinigte) 45.000 of Montgomery’s blacks and attracted (zog) the attention of whole nation - It led to the first victory of non-violent (gewaltfrei) resistance: segregation in buses had to be abolished: first great victory in M.
