The story ?A Horse and Two Goats?, written by R.K. Narayan is deal with the lack of understanding between two cultures embodied from a poor Indian person and a rich American businessman. An old Indian man, Muni, is sitting on a road on the outskirts of his village with his two grazing goats and is waiting until it?s time to go home. Behind him is a statue of a horse. In former times the horse was important for the inhabitants of the village because it symbolizes a cover from the evil but today it?s unimportant and forgotten. As Muni is sitting there, an American tourist comes and stops when he saw him and the statue. The American wants to buy the horse as a souvenir for his cocktailparties. He believes that the statue belongs to the old Indian. The following dialogue between the two different men is full of misunderstandings. The American can only speak English and the Indian man only his language, Tamil. The Indian thinks the American is a Police men (because his clothes) who wants to ask him because the murders in the neighbourhood. But he realises that the American doesn?t want to harm him. At first Muni believes that the American wants to change his money but then he ?understands? that he wants to buy his goats. He takes the money (he never have seen so much money before; and dreams about an own little shop) and goes home. But at home his wife believes that he have stolen the money and abuses him. The American believes that he has bought the statue and waits for support with the transport.
