- more than 3000 institutions of higher education: public or private
- you can choose between community colleges, the differences concern to the possibilities to study and the degrees, but all offer undergraduate study

- they offer career and transfer programs for 2 years
- career programs: vocational training -> after finish you get a certificate
- transfer programs: similar to the first two years of a college or university
