The play ?Death of a Salesman", is about the main character, Willy Loman, a man living at the beginning of modern America, in the late 1940?s. In this time more and more new appliances and cars are being manufactured. So Willy is constantly trying to obtain the best things for his two sons Happy and Biff , and his wife Linda. As he slowly starts to lose his mind in this materialistic world, it becomes clear that the only thing he is really concerned about is keeping up with the people around him in times of success and possessions. especially Linda is always worried about him. In former times Willy had an affair in Boston, which Biff has found out
In the end Willy commits suicide, which Linda has always expected

The question is: How do the charakters evaluate themselves and how do the other charakters evaluate them? Pay special attention to what is said about Willy.

(The types of charakters are divided into two categories: there are the ...nebencharaktere
And the main charakters like Willy, Biff, Happy and Linda, the figures i want to talk about.

He evaluated himself very highly in former times. He always said to his family and his friends that he was the bes salesman, that he was doing better than all the other salesmen and that he knocked them everywhere. He thought that he would make a high career and that he would soon have his own business.
So Willy always had very big dreams and wishes for the future. But nothing happened because he only belonged to the (durchschnitt)
Now, in the present, he knows that he has failed and that his dreams didn't come true. But he doesn't want to realise it really - he also goes on working although he is in the age of retirement.
Willy is too proud to talk with his family about his problems. All the failures in his life break him, he starts talking to himself, he slips back into the past where life was much easier for him, but he also sees opportunities he didn't take.
Willy has the problem that he thinks that success will come automatically when you look good, So he evaluated himself always too highly and waited for his success instead of working for it. In his opinion the outer appearance is more important than learning for school, to have good marks or to work hard for own dreams.
He thought that he was so handsome that success would come and so he didn't take any of the opportunities which would have helped him to make a career.
The other salesman on the other hand evaluate him very lowly:
He's too talkative, makes too much jokes and is too fat.
But Linda always supports her husband, she evaluates him very highly:
For her he's the best, the most handsome man on earth and so she always supports him in his thoughts and in his ?picture? about himself. She tries to give him self-confidence and she ?won?t have anyone making him feel unwanted and low? (p.39, l.40f.).
His sons Biff and Happy evaluated Willy also very highly because they didn't know the truth:
Now, as an adult, Happy adapted his father's values. He is working and has his ?...
