AIDS in south africa

introduction
-sa presently experiencing one of the most serious aids epidemics in world
-end of 2005 (two thousand and five) already 5 and a half million people lived with HIV in South Africa
-almost 1,000 aids death every day
-lot of factors have been blamed for raising epidemic in south Africa AIDS
-difficult to imagine all the suffering that HIV has caused
-even with statistics hard to imagine for us as a country that is less affected
-statistics say that almost one in 5 adults are already infected

-rising trend
-however the spreading now seems to have stabilized
-may even decrease
-surveys  say that there is a drop of new infections
-nevertheless you should know that the study in 2006 included twice as many women and samples were taken from 3 times as many clinics as previous surveys
-this changes influenced results

-persons with HIV not just suffer from psychological pressure
-also has an effect on their lives, families and friends
-there are antiretroviral drug treatments (even sa) but they are just available for a few people
-almost half of all deaths in sa caused by AIDS
-because of this high death rate, in some parts of the country the cemeteries are running out of space
-surveys found south South Africans spent more time at funerals as they did at the hair dresser or barbeques
AIDS orphans on the grave of their parents inside their home.

Effects on social and economical progress:

Average life expectancy now 54 years ? without AIDS probably 64.
Between 1990 and 2003 ? as u could see a period during which HIV drastically? the country fell by 35 places in the Human Development Index (global directory that ranks countries by how developed they are)
2006 a researcher found out that hiv-patients soon make up 60-70% of medical costs in sa hospitals
Schools suffer from less teachers because of the AIDS epidemic. In 2006 it was estimated that 21% of teachers in South Africa were living with HIV

Homosexual and heterosexual transmission
-first recorded case of AIDS reported in sa was in 1982
-hiv infections seemed mainly to appear between gay men
-by 1985 clear that others were affected too

-about AIDS cases of transmissions per year in south Africa between 1986-1992
-show relation between transmissions of homosexual and heterosexual people
-1986 more homo/bisexual people with aids than heterosexual (straight people)
-number of cases from heterosexual people
-1989 almost balanced
-next year already many more cases of AIDS between heterosexual people than homosexual
-decreasing trend on the AIDS cases from homosexual people (in 1992 reached number of cases in 1986)
-while increasing trend of AIDS among heterosexual people reached its peak 1992 with almost 400 cases

-how could HIV spread so unchecked ?
-most rapid increase HIV prevalence took place between 1993 and 2000
-during that time the country was distracted by significant political changes
-attention of the people and the media was concentrated on the political and social changes during that time
-even though  political changes were positive they did not take the virus serious and HIV could spread
-the government also hesitated too long to buy antiretroviral treatments
-not until 2004 after other countries already begun to supply the treatments and a lot pressure from activists, they started to follow
-nevertheless the adopting process is very slow among the population

prevention
-but for all that there are HIV voluntary counseling and testing not many people use them
-especially men do not want to know if they are HIV positiv
-probably because a lot of them are afraid of consequences that might follow
-eventhough there are projects and campaigns in sa against HIV it does not seem to help much
-eigther the message isn?t getting through to the people or they receive the informations but do not react
-important factor :mother to child transmission
- when an hiv positive women passes virus to her baby
-can happen during pregnancy, aborning or breastfeeding
-effective prevention would be
-to avoid the infection as future parents
-to stop unwanted pregnancies among HIV positive women
-or preventing the transmission of HIV to the child with the aid of antiretroviral treatments
-these treatments can prevent the mother to child transmission if the women takes it every day

-since the hiv prevalence decreased in 1999 there was hope that the campaigns against aids have an influence on the population
-but from 2000 the prevalence increased again and by 2005 the hiv prevalence was already by 30.2%
.

Discrimination
-problem of misinformation?s not just lead to the slow adoption of the treatments
-also lead to discrimination towards people living with HIV
-a coming out as...
